IN 1856, Henry Gordon Selfridge – Harry to his friends – was born into shopkeeping. Quickly outgrowing his humble origins, though, Mile-a-Minute Harry surged onwards and turned Marshall Field in Chicago into the largest store in the world before turning his sights on London in 1905. Quickly establishing himself as the Earl of Oxford Street, Selfridges today leads in a vibrant, energetic era, totally in tune with the legacy of Gordon Selfridge.
